Well i know that you do not want him to have powers…. but: I got an idea for his origin story and this is a short version….. He drank a potion that gave him an enhanced body. And depending on the type of "medieval" you are talking about, then it could span into the 1650s! though the 1660s COULD be called "medieval" they are not because they are too close to the 1700s which was not medieval at all.
